India is advancing its efforts to procure five additional S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia, as Moscow has submitted a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The decision hinges on the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Security, contingent on a favorable price negotiation and clearance from the Finance Ministry. India’s previous agreement, inked in 2018 for five S-400 systems at a cost of $5.43 billion, anticipates the final delivery by November 2026.
The acquisition of these additional systems aims to bolster India’s air defence capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector bordering China. The S-400 has proven its effectiveness during India’s air defence operations in Operation Sindoor in May 2025, strengthening the argument for expanding its fleet. The reported performance of the S-400 during this operation has reinforced India’s decision to enhance its defensive infrastructure.
Meanwhile, India remains undecided on the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft, despite the Indian Air Force expressing interest in the proposal. This interest is particularly relevant given China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, which has prompted India to consider options to maintain its strategic edge in the region.
The proposed acquisition of the S-400 systems is expected to be a focal point in broader defence discussions between India and Russia. These discussions gain further importance with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to India for the BRICS summit in September. This visit is anticipated to serve as a critical platform for advancing bilateral defence cooperation.
