India is actively engaging with U.S. authorities to tackle concerns stemming from the United States’ updated visa regulations, which could significantly impact Indian students and academic professionals. During a media briefing on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry, stated that New Delhi is vigilantly observing the situation and intends to continue addressing issues with Washington as they arise, particularly when Indian nationals encounter challenges.
The recent changes, made by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, introduce more stringent residency requirements for holders of F, J, and I visas. These visas are primarily used by international students, exchange visitors, and media representatives. Under the new framework, these non-immigrant visa holders will now face fixed durations of stay, a shift from the previous system that permitted longer stays without constant federal oversight.
Additionally, the revised regulations cut down the grace period for F visa holders after the completion of their studies. Whereas students previously had 60 days to leave the country, transfer to another academic institution, or adjust their immigration status, they will now have only 30 days to make these transitions.
Indian officials have underlined that while visa and immigration policies are sovereign issues, they remain committed to assisting Indian citizens in navigating these changes and aim to reduce any hardships caused by the updated regulations. The Indian government’s proactive stance reflects its dedication to supporting its citizens abroad amidst evolving international policies.
