Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, made a significant visit to Doha to express condolences following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This gesture highlights the enduring and robust ties between India and Qatar.
During his visit, Rijiju met with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to convey the sympathies of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju praised the late Father Amir as a visionary leader who was instrumental in Qatar’s development and in fortifying the strategic partnership with India. He noted that the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns the loss and holds the Father Amir’s contributions in high regard.
Prior to this visit, Prime Minister Modi had also paid homage to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, recognizing him as a great friend of India and appreciating his efforts in enhancing the bilateral relationship between the two nations. To honor his memory, India observed a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026. This included flying the national flag at half-mast on government buildings and suspending official entertainment activities.
This visit by Minister Rijiju underscores the close diplomatic relationship shared by India and Qatar and the significance both nations place on their historical partnership. It reflects a mutual respect and the importance of upholding strong diplomatic connections amid shared regional and global challenges.
