Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 initiative on Sunday, aiming to eliminate the trafficking of narcotics across India’s borders. The ambitious plan concentrates on three main areas: reducing the supply of drugs, cutting down demand, and minimizing the harm associated with drug use. Shah emphasized that since 2019, the government has been executing a coordinated campaign against drug networks nationwide.
Key strategies in the roadmap include the implementation of a four-tier NCORD mechanism, the establishment of Anti-Narcotics Task Forces across all states and Union Territories, and the launch of a national rehabilitation helpline. Additionally, the government has introduced the NIDAN database to track narcotics offenders, alongside a data-driven approach to map drug networks and hotspots. These measures are part of a comprehensive effort to curb drug-related activities throughout the country.
In terms of enforcement, Shah reported significant achievements, with agencies seizing over 29,968 kg of synthetic drugs valued at more than ₹19,600 crore from 2020 to July 2026. Overall, from 2019 to July 2026, the total seizures of narcotic and psychotropic substances surpassed 93.34 lakh kg, reflecting the government’s ongoing crackdown on drug trade.
Furthermore, authorities have confiscated assets worth ₹1,841 crore in 3,016 cases between 2024 and June 2026, targeting not only the drugs themselves but also the financial networks supporting these illegal activities. These efforts underscore the government’s commitment to dismantling the economic infrastructure behind drug trafficking.
Shah’s visit to Goa was part of an official trip, but he returned to Delhi earlier than planned after assessing the state’s security preparedness. His presence and the announcement of the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 roadmap highlight the government’s intensified focus on combating narcotics and securing India’s borders against this pervasive threat.
