Doval and Wang Yi Focus on Border Peace to Strengthen Ties

Date:

India has underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability along its border with China to foster the development of bilateral relations. This emphasis was made clear during a meeting in Beijing between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. This gathering constituted the 25th round of discussions between the nations’ special representatives aimed at resolving the protracted boundary dispute.

The dialogue focused on several critical areas, including advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and expanding cooperation across the frontier. Both nations reviewed the positive strides made in their bilateral relationship and explored avenues to ensure continued stability along the Line of Actual Control. Additionally, they reaffirmed their mutual dedication to achieving a political resolution to the boundary issue, emphasizing the importance of their long-term interests.

The recent talks build upon progress achieved following a 2024 agreement between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which sought to mitigate tensions in the Ladakh region. Since that understanding, exchanges between citizens, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through designated routes have resumed, signaling a gradual normalization of ties.

Doval highlighted that the return to normalcy in bilateral relations was directly tied to maintaining peace along the border. Meanwhile, China suggested that the boundary issue should be contextualized within the broader scope of their relationship. Despite the constructive dialogue, neither side disclosed significant advancements regarding the demarcation of the disputed boundary. Both countries agreed to persist with negotiations, with the next round of talks slated to take place in India in 2027.

The discussions gain additional importance with the anticipated visit of Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This upcoming event adds urgency to the efforts to further stabilize and enhance bilateral relations between the two nations.
