Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Canada in December, as confirmed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The visit is anticipated to coincide with the G20 summit in Miami and comes as both nations strive to finalize a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026.
Modi’s visit will highlight the ongoing efforts between India and Canada to strengthen bilateral ties in trade, investment, and other key areas. The fifth round of negotiations for the CEPA is scheduled to commence on October 5, following progress in previous discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in sectors such as energy, technology, artificial intelligence, and defense.
This upcoming trip will mark Modi’s first standalone bilateral visit to Canada since 2015, although he attended the G7 summit there in June 2025. During that event, Modi and Carney discussed ways to bolster the bilateral relationship, which has experienced strains in recent years.
Carney emphasized the significance of the Canada-India relationship, underscoring its importance for trade, investment, security, and people-to-people ties. Canada is particularly focused on doubling bilateral trade with India to C$70 billion annually by 2030, a significant increase from the C$30.4 billion recorded in 2025.
The renewed focus on economic engagement follows Carney’s visit to India in March 2026, where both countries agreed to accelerate CEPA negotiations. These efforts reflect a shared commitment to rebuilding economic and diplomatic relationships that have cooled over the years.
