India Partners with UN for Multilateralism Platform Initiative

Date:

India, along with several other nations including the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Barbados, and Kenya, has initiated the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) platform at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This new alliance aims to bolster multilateral cooperation, enhance global peace efforts, and advocate for the reform of international institutions.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity for stronger multilateral ties in light of current geopolitical tensions and conflicts. He underscored the need for more inclusive discussions and transparent decision-making processes within global organizations. The platform’s declaration calls for reforms to create a more effective, representative, and inclusive multilateral system.

The P4M initiative identifies several critical areas for increased international collaboration. These include international security, climate change, emerging technologies, development finance, resilient supply chains, pandemic preparedness, and counterterrorism. Jaishankar highlighted these sectors as pivotal for future joint actions among the participating countries.

In addition to these focus areas, the members of P4M have pledged to work together on sustainable development, fair trade, global finance, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and global health. The platform’s declaration stresses the importance of these sectors in achieving broader cooperation and reform goals.

To facilitate these efforts, the participating nations have agreed to establish a coordination mechanism to prioritize areas of joint action. The P4M platform remains open to other countries interested in strengthening multilateral cooperation, inviting them to participate in this collaborative endeavor aimed at addressing pressing global challenges.
