India Reduces Travel Time with Major Infrastructure Expansion

Date:

India’s ambitious infrastructure expansion is slashing travel times across key routes, according to a government factsheet. The newly constructed Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is set to cut the road journey between the two major cities to approximately 12 hours, a significant improvement from the previous 33-hour trip.

Several expressways have similarly reduced travel durations. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway now enables travelers to complete the journey in about 50 minutes, down from 2.5 hours. In southern India, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway has shortened travel time from nearly three hours to around 75 minutes, while the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor now takes approximately 2.5 hours instead of more than six hours.

In the west, the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg has halved travel time to about eight hours. Meanwhile, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway has significantly reduced the Delhi-Amritsar journey to four hours and the Delhi-Katra trip to six hours from 14 hours.

Connectivity improvements extend beyond highways. Major bridge and tunnel projects are transforming travel in the Northeast and mountainous regions. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu bridge has cut travel time between parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to one hour. The Atal Tunnel, bypassing the Rohtang Pass, saves four to five hours for travelers between Manali and the Lahaul-Spiti region.

Indian Railways is also enhancing its network with modern services like the Vande Bharat trains, which have reduced journey times on various routes. The New Delhi-Varanasi service now takes around eight hours, while the Katra-Srinagar route has been reduced to approximately three hours.

Additionally, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, anticipated to be operational by August 2027, promises to further revolutionize travel by completing the 508-kilometer stretch in roughly 1 hour 58 minutes. This corridor will feature 12 stations and a significant undersea tunnel beneath Thane Creek.
