During a joint press conference in New Delhi on July 2, Takaichi mistakenly relayed that Modi had referred to her as his “beautiful sister.” This error was later attributed to a misinterpretation during the translation process.
Officials explained that Modi actually addressed Takaichi as “my sister” in Hindi. When translated into English, it was rendered as “my younger sister.” However, as the interpretation was relayed further from Hindi to English and then to Japanese, the phrase became inaccurately translated to “beautiful sister.” Takaichi, believing the translation to be correct, repeated this phrase and mentioned that she and Modi would continue their relationship as brother and sister.
The Japanese officials emphasized that the complexity of simultaneous relay interpretation led to this mistake. Despite the slip, they confirmed that the incident has not strained diplomatic ties between Japan and India. Furthermore, Indian authorities have not raised any concerns regarding the mistranslation.
