Ireland Prioritizes India for EU Partnership, Targets FTA by Year-End

Date:

The European Union has underscored the significance of its relationship with India, positioning the nation as a vital strategic ally. This partnership is marked by expanding collaboration across diverse domains such as trade, technology, security, and connectivity, as both parties aim to finalize a pivotal Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end.

As Ireland assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly emphasized that the EU’s partnership with India transcends trade. It extends into critical areas including technology, research, climate initiatives, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation. Ambassador Kelly highlighted how both India and the EU are fortifying their relationship to tackle mutual global challenges and drive sustainable economic development.

The eagerly anticipated India-EU Free Trade Agreement, now ready for formalization, is projected to be signed by December, potentially taking effect early next year. This agreement is a testament to the deepening ties between the two entities, which have also broadened their cooperation in vital sectors like defense, security, and emerging technologies, particularly in light of evolving global economic and geopolitical dynamics.

EU Ambassador Herve Delphin noted that both Europe and India are navigating the changing global environment by seeking greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust alliances. He pointed out the critical need to safeguard freedom of navigation and secure global trade routes, advocating for enhanced collaboration between India and the EU on maritime security and regional stability.
