India has embarked on a new era of sustainable rail transportation with the introduction of its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered train. This significant milestone was marked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who inaugurated the train from Jind in Haryana, underscoring the nation’s commitment to green energy advancements.
The initiative centers around a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure that includes a production system, refuelling station, and a locomotive driven by fuel cells. Hydrogen is produced on-site using an electrolyzer, after which it is compressed, stored, and carefully dispensed into the train at a dedicated refuelling station. This setup showcases India’s evolving expertise in building indigenous hydrogen solutions.
At the heart of the refuelling system are high-pressure compressors and hydrogen dispensers, supported by an automated fuel management platform. This platform ensures the safety and efficiency of the operation by monitoring the compression, storage, and dispensing processes. The project is a testament to India’s advancing capabilities and aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to bolster the country’s position in the clean energy sector.
Officials anticipate that similar hydrogen refuelling systems will soon be deployed along several heritage railway lines, including the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, and Nilgiri Mountain Railway. By adopting hydrogen fuel cell technology, these trains will generate electricity through the combination of hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. This presents a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered trains and is set to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions within the transportation sector.
