Delhi-NCR Enacts Pollution Control Measures as Air Quality Worsens

Date:

The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage I has been implemented across Delhi-NCR as the region’s air quality has declined into the poor category. This action follows Delhi recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 233, which indicates poor air quality and poses a risk of breathing discomfort, particularly to individuals with respiratory or other health conditions.

Under GRAP Stage I, measures are being taken to mitigate pollution and prevent further deterioration of air quality. These include controlling dust from construction sites, enforcing a ban on open waste burning, and encouraging the use of cleaner cooking fuels in commercial eateries. Restrictions on the use of diesel generators have also been put in place, subject to applicable exemptions, and vehicle pollution checks are being intensified to monitor and penalize visibly polluting vehicles.

Traffic management efforts are being enhanced to reduce congestion at busy intersections, and motorists are encouraged to switch off their engines at red lights to cut down on emissions. Industrial pollution control is another focus, with polluting industrial units and power plants required to adhere to emission standards.

Residents in the area are urged to maintain their vehicles, avoid unnecessary engine idling, use public transport when possible, and report any pollution-related issues through designated government platforms. The proactive measures under GRAP Stage I aim to address pollution at its source through preventive actions and stricter enforcement.

Delhi’s weather conditions have also been noted, with a minimum temperature of 18°C recorded and a daytime maximum expected to reach around 31°C. Authorities will continue to monitor air quality levels closely and implement necessary preventive measures to ensure that the situation does not worsen.
