CJI Surya Kant Pledges Justice Access During Student Protest Cases

Date:

The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, has reassured the public, particularly focusing on the younger generation, that the Supreme Court remains dedicated to upholding their rights and ensuring that justice is served through appropriate legal channels. This statement comes amid ongoing student demonstrations and allegations of excessive force by police officers. The Chief Justice emphasized the court’s willingness to address every petition that is filed correctly, adhering strictly to legal protocols. He assured that the judicial system remains accessible to all citizens, promising that justice will be rendered whenever it is justified.

Addressing recent concerns about the court’s response to these issues, the Chief Justice clarified that the court had not previously declined to consider the matter; rather, there had been no formal petition submitted initially. Instead, a representation had been provided, which did not fulfill the legal criteria required to initiate judicial proceedings. His remarks aimed to dispel any misunderstandings about the court’s stance and procedures.

With new petitions having been formally filed, alleging police misconduct during the protests on July 20, the Supreme Court has now agreed to schedule a hearing for the matter on Monday. This development follows the proper legal filing of these grievances, allowing the court to officially address the allegations brought forth by the petitioners.

The Chief Justice also issued a caution against the spread of incorrect reports that suggested the court had refused to hear the case. He underscored the importance of accurate reporting in maintaining public trust in the judicial process and emphasized that the court remains committed to delivering justice wherever it is needed.
