Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rallies across the state from October 13 to October 31. The rallies aim to counter what the BJP perceives as attempts by the Congress party to undermine democratic institutions. Sarma, speaking to reporters in Guwahati, emphasized that the events would be peaceful gatherings held at district headquarters to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reinforce public confidence in constitutional bodies.
Sarma criticized Congress and other opposition parties for allegedly challenging institutions such as the Election Commission and the Supreme Court, accusing them of doing so for political purposes. He specifically addressed Congress’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a process he argues is vital for addressing issues related to voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam.
The Chief Minister also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of applying different standards to election outcomes depending on the victorious party. Sarma further criticized Gandhi’s actions concerning the Supreme Court, asserting that constitutional institutions should remain free from political pressure.
The BJP has stated that the rallies will focus on supporting democratic institutions and opposing the Congress party’s stance on electoral and constitutional matters. This announcement comes amid ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes, institutional independence, and immigration-related issues in the state.
