India retained their Asian Games men’s cricket title with a thrilling 19-run victory over Pakistan at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. The Indian team posted a formidable total of 211/6 after opting to bat first, thanks to a brisk start by Abhishek Sharma and a strategic late innings by Tilak Varma.
Abhishek Sharma laid a solid foundation with a rapid half-century, propelling India to 81/2 in the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20 internationals. Although Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, managed to slow down the scoring rate during the middle overs by taking key wickets, India’s momentum was revived by Tilak Varma.
Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls, combined with Shivam Dube’s 27, formed a crucial 62-run partnership that pushed India past the 200-run mark, setting a challenging target for Pakistan. In response, Pakistan started their chase strongly, with Hasan Nawaz leading the charge. Nawaz’s unbeaten 96 from 51 balls, complemented by an 87-run stand with Saim Ayub, brought Pakistan within striking distance and applied significant pressure on the Indian side.
However, India’s bowlers eventually regained control of the match. Washington Sundar’s excellent performance in the 18th over disrupted Pakistan’s flow, and Jasprit Bumrah further tightened the screws in the penultimate over. With Pakistan needing 33 runs from the final over, Shivam Dube successfully defended the target, securing India’s 19-run victory.
This win not only secured another Asian Games gold medal for India but also reinforced their dominance over Pakistan in T20 internationals. The Indian men’s cricket team’s successful title defense showcased their resilience and strategic depth in high-pressure situations.
