The West Bengal government has unveiled a significant initiative to support the preservation of historic chariots used in Rath Yatra celebrations by providing financial assistance to 60 committees across the state. Each committee will receive ₹5 lakh, marking the first instance of state-provided funding for these traditional festivities. This effort is aimed at ensuring the restoration and maintenance of the wooden chariots, many of which are centuries old and in urgent need of repair.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the importance of this funding, encouraging the committees to prioritize repairs and preservation efforts. As part of the state’s broader commitment to enhancing religious and cultural activities, this funding initiative reflects a strategic push to both preserve heritage and support community participation in religious events.
In addition to the financial support for the Rath Yatra committees, the state has planned a unique gesture for the 30-km Shravan Yatra in Tarakeshwar, Hooghly district. Helicopters will be used to shower flower petals on devotees participating in this event, adding a special touch to the spiritual experience. To further assist pilgrims, Seva Kendras will be set up at 75 fair locations, providing essential services such as medical aid, police assistance, and drinking water.
Looking ahead, the West Bengal government intends to extend financial support to even more Rath Yatra committees, underscoring its commitment to cultural preservation and religious tourism. The state is also investing ₹1,000 crore over the next three years in the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit project. This ambitious initiative aims to promote pilgrimage tourism by restoring historic temples and enhancing the overall experience for visitors, thereby boosting the state’s religious tourism profile.
