India and Switzerland have signed five significant agreements to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, mobility, and technology. The agreements were formalized during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin on Monday.
The agreements focus on migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. A notable component is a migration and mobility partnership aimed at addressing irregular migration and human trafficking. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years and renewable permits for students.
In addition, a separate agreement will facilitate the exchange of young professionals, allowing up to 300 individuals from each country to engage in temporary employment opportunities, thus gaining professional and language experience.
The discussions also emphasized trade and investment, with both countries agreeing to improve market access for Indian exports and encourage Swiss investments in sectors such as biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability. India anticipates that improved access to Swiss markets will bolster its exports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods.
India and Switzerland also expressed interest in expanding cooperation in defense production, military exchanges, and nuclear energy. The two nations plan to initiate joint research projects in health, clean energy, and space and will promote collaboration in transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, and electric vehicles.
The meeting coincided with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which aims to enhance trade and economic ties between India and the four EFTA countries. During their talks, Modi and Parmelin also addressed global and regional issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, underscoring the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to support peace and stability.
