Rubio Visits India, Discusses Trade Tensions with Modi Amid Trump Focus

Date:

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has commenced a four-day visit to India, with the primary objective of enhancing strategic partnerships and broadening cooperation in various sectors including trade, defense, energy, and technology. His arrival on Saturday sets the stage for a series of high-level meetings, including discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

This visit coincides with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue’s upcoming foreign ministers’ meeting, which involves India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. Key issues on the agenda are expected to include Indo-Pacific security, defense collaboration, critical technologies, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and resilient supply chains, all amid growing concerns over China’s expanding influence in the region.

Trade relations are likely to be a focal point, especially in light of tensions arising from former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on Indian exports. Both nations are anticipated to explore strategies to enhance economic ties and mitigate trade disputes. Additionally, energy security will be a significant topic, as the US looks to increase its exports of crude oil and LNG to India, while discussions persist regarding India’s acquisition of discounted oil from Russia.

Defense cooperation remains a cornerstone of the talks, with India currently utilizing several American-made defense platforms, such as Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. The discussions are expected to extend into joint production and collaboration in advanced defense and space technologies.

During his journey, Rubio plans to visit multiple cities, including Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In Kolkata, he is scheduled to visit the Missionaries of Charity’s headquarters, an organization founded by Mother Teresa.
