To utilize this new system, users can create a distinct handle within the app. Those wishing to reach out will only need the username, eliminating the need for a visible phone number. If a desired username is already claimed, WhatsApp will propose alternative options using an integrated generator. Notably, there will be no public directory for usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the exact username can initiate contact, thereby enhancing user security.
Users interested in securing a username can do so by updating the app and navigating to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. The platform will notify users when the feature becomes available in their region. Due to WhatsApp’s extensive user base, early reservations are encouraged as popular username choices may become highly competitive.
Further enhancing privacy, an optional “username key” will serve as an additional security measure. This key can be shared separately, giving users control over who can initiate conversations with them.
