Starmer Finalizes India-UK Trade Agreement, Then Resigns as Leader

Date:

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, before stepping down from his role, marked a significant achievement by finalizing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The agreement, reached during discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit 2026, is set to go into effect on July 15. This Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is poised to enhance the already substantial trade relationship between the United Kingdom and India, which currently stands at approximately £48 billion annually.

Starmer’s tenure has been marked by a commitment to strengthening ties with India, making the trade deal a pivotal goal of his administration. He emphasized the economic potential of the agreement, pointing to India’s growing influence on the global stage and the mutual benefits of streamlined trade. Since leading the Labour Party after its 2019 electoral defeat, Starmer has focused on building connections with the British Indian community and fostering a robust partnership with India in various sectors, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change efforts.

Before venturing into politics, Starmer had a notable career in law, including serving as Director of Public Prosecutions. He ascended to the position of Prime Minister following Labour’s resounding victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial achievements, such as economic stabilization and domestic reforms, Starmer’s leadership faced hurdles due to policy challenges and political setbacks that eventually undermined his standing.

In his resignation address, Starmer reflected on the shifting confidence within his party, acknowledging that colleagues no longer viewed him as the suitable leader for the upcoming general election. He accepted their judgment with respect and gratitude, marking the conclusion of a significant era in British politics.
