Nana Patekar Passes Away at 75, Leaves Lasting Impact on Indian Cinema

Date:

Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar has passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. With a career spanning nearly five decades, Patekar was renowned for his intense performances and ability to portray complex characters, reshaping the archetype of a Bollywood hero.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he began his cinematic journey with the 1978 Hindi film “Gaman” and gained further recognition with “Aaj Ki Awaz” in 1984. His role in “Ankush” (1986) established his reputation for playing unconventional, emotionally intense characters. Patekar’s performance in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” was widely appreciated, and his role in “Parinda” won him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Patekar transitioned to lead roles in films such as “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” with the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor. He also ventured into directing with his debut film “Prahaar” in 1991, where he portrayed a former army officer seeking justice. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he deftly navigated between lead and supporting roles, showcasing a versatility that resisted categorization.

Beyond dramatic and action roles, Patekar demonstrated his comedic talent in the 2007 film “Welcome,” where he played Uday Shetty. His diverse filmography includes memorable performances in “Bluffmaster!,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Ab Tak Chhappan,” “Rajneeti,” and the Marathi film “Natsamrat.”

Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta renewed allegations of sexual harassment from the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the allegations, and Mumbai police later filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. This controversy became a focal point in India’s #MeToo movement.

Despite the debates around his personal and professional life, Patekar remained a respected figure in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, known for his distinctive acting style and commitment to his craft. His legacy continues to influence generations of performers, cementing his status as one of India’s most distinctive actors.
