India and Poland to Enhance Cooperation in Defence, Technology, and Trade

Date:

India and Poland have committed to enhancing their collaboration across multiple sectors, primarily focusing on defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This decision came as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk engaged in discussions aimed at broadening economic ties and setting a goal to double bilateral trade by 2030.

The leaders identified key opportunities in strategic sectors, emphasizing joint development and production of defence equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. Additional areas of cooperation include critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and financial technology. Modi encouraged Polish firms to partner with India on co-development projects, while Tusk underscored the necessity of diversifying access to essential minerals and resources to bolster economic security.

Currently, the bilateral trade between the two nations stands at approximately $6.3 billion, with aspirations to double this figure within the next decade. A delegation of around 100 Polish companies is actively exploring business prospects in diverse fields such as defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.

Plans are underway to establish a bilateral startup bridge and foster partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials anticipate that the proposed India-European Union trade agreement will further enhance opportunities for exports and investment. A focal point of the cooperation is defence, where India and Poland are negotiating an agreement to protect and exchange classified information, supporting closer collaboration in defence industries. They have also agreed to initiate a defence industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue, exploring joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies.

Beyond economic and strategic considerations, regional and international issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, were part of the dialogue. Modi reiterated India’s support for meaningful diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, and Polish officials welcomed New Delhi’s advocacy for a negotiated resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

The relationship between India and Poland is also strengthened by historical ties, such as Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and India’s support to Polish refugees during World War II. The meeting between the two leaders marks a significant step in fortifying India-Poland relations, with a shared vision of expanding trade, enhancing strategic cooperation, and building resilient supply chains.
