IndiGo Halts Mumbai-Manchester Route Due to Increased Costs, Airspace Issues

Date:

IndiGo, India’s leading airline, is set to temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester route starting August 31, 2026. This decision comes in response to ongoing airspace restrictions, extended flight times, and surging operational costs. The airline has attributed these challenges to broader issues affecting global aviation, notably geopolitical tensions, soaring fuel prices, and disrupted flight paths, all contributing to the increased expenses of maintaining long-haul routes.

In light of this suspension, IndiGo plans to return one of its leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially leased in early 2025 to facilitate IndiGo’s expansion into the European market ahead of receiving its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension, the airline assures that its other long-haul international services will continue to operate without disruption.

The move comes as IndiGo’s expansion into Europe has seen strong demand, bolstering its presence in critical international markets. However, the extended flight durations due to airspace limitations, compounded by rising aviation turbine fuel costs and foreign exchange rate fluctuations, have rendered the Manchester route financially unviable at present. Abhijit Dasgupta, IndiGo’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, expressed regret over the decision, emphasizing that while customer feedback has been favorable, the suspension was unavoidable under current conditions. He reiterated IndiGo’s commitment to resuming the route when circumstances improve.

Furthermore, IndiGo is exploring other avenues to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways and is committed to advancing its strategy for long-term international growth. Passengers affected by this route suspension will receive prior notification and assistance, including options for alternate travel arrangements or refunds where applicable.
