Despite their strong historical connections, current bilateral trade hovers around $30 billion. The two countries are keen on tapping into greater economic opportunities, particularly through increased Indian investment in Indonesia. Key areas of interest include critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security.
Digital cooperation is set to be a significant focus of Modi’s visit. Indonesia has shown interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives. This visit could pave the way for the two countries to explore partnerships in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses. Maritime security remains a top priority, with both nations planning to enhance collaboration in the critical Strait of Malacca.
