Iran’s Pezeshkian Makes His Most Compelling Case Yet for Gulf Neutrality

Date:

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has made his most compelling case yet for Gulf neutrality, arguing that the region’s nations can only achieve security and development if they stop enabling enemy military operations against Iran. His message, delivered more than a month into the Iran-US conflict, is the culmination of a sustained diplomatic effort to reshape Gulf alignments. Tehran appears to be investing heavily in the idea that Gulf governments can be persuaded to adopt a more neutral stance.

Gulf nations including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman have been caught between their longstanding alliance with the United States and the growing costs of that alliance in the context of an active regional war. Iranian retaliatory strikes against those nations have added to the pressure. Gulf governments are now confronting a strategic dilemma that shows no easy resolution.

On X, Pezeshkian communicated Iran’s military doctrine of non-preemption and firm retaliation, while making an appeal to Gulf leaders grounded in the logic of national interest. He argued that neutrality, expressed through the denial of enemy forces access to Gulf territory, was the only path to genuine development and security. The case was made with clarity and conviction.

Pakistan’s diplomatic initiative has been one of the most consequential in the region, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif serving as an active and trusted intermediary. Sharif’s meeting with Pezeshkian confirmed that Iran views trust as the non-negotiable prerequisite for any formal peace process. Pakistan’s balanced approach has been praised by Tehran, enhancing Islamabad’s standing as a credible peacemaker.

A major multilateral diplomatic gathering in Pakistan is assembling foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey for intensive consultations on the war. Their meetings with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Prime Minister Sharif aim to produce a coordinated regional approach to de-escalation. The talks carry significant potential to advance the cause of peace.
